Digging deep: Planting trees and building a legacy 

This year, the SEA team of over 25 participants planted 200 red, white, and bur oak trees, along with hazelnut bushes, to restore the former farmland. These species have proven to thrive together and contribute to the ecological balance of the area. While the physical act of planting trees is rewarding, the event is also an educational experience. The MCCD staff provided insight into the history of the site and the significance of these native species in the local ecosystem. With the oak trees becoming increasingly scarce in McHenry County, this project is critical in restoring a natural habitat that will support local wildlife and improve the overall health of the land.

Inspiring the next generation of environmental stewards 

Families played a significant role in this year's event, with many employees bringing their children to join in the planting effort. It’s a chance not only to get their hands dirty but also to learn about the importance of preserving the environment for the future. “Seeing the kids out here, excited to plant ‘their’ tree, really brings home the idea that we’re doing something that matters,” said Jan Sahm, Staff Project Specialist Quality Operations and SEA site lead. “We’re not just teaching them about trees; we’re teaching them how to care for the world around them.”

The sight of children alongside their parents, shovels in hand, was one of the most inspiring aspects of the day. It’s clear that these events are fostering a sense of responsibility and connection to the environment that will last far beyond the planting. “It was great to see the next generation getting involved,” said Ecklund. “We’re creating lifelong memories and values for these kids.”
