In celebration of World Environment Day 2025, Stryker’s Sustainability Solutions (SSS) is highlighting some of our accomplishments as a “single-use” medical device reprocessor. Together, with our customers we are working to make an impact in healthcare sustainability!

Doing away with the single-use mindset

Reprocessing can be a logical solution to reducing a hospital’s environmental impact. With hospitals generating an average of 29lbs of waste per bed per day, the challenge can seem insurmountable.¹ But SSS has developed proprietary technologies and processes that make it uniquely able to provide high-quality, performance-tested products along with data-driven insights about reductions in waste, emissions, and resource consumption.

SSS announces 2024 Environmental Excellence Awards

SSS Environmental Excellence Awards are based on these data-driven insights. The awards celebrate the strides that healthcare facilities have made extending the useful life of “single-use” devices. The awards also quantify the collective impact these healthcare facilities have had in making healthcare more sustainable.

In April, SSS recognized 3,773 healthcare facilities for their leadership in environmental sustainability during 2024. Together, these healthcare facilities diverted a total of 5 million pounds of waste from landfills and repopulated 27 ha of land and oceans with 165,000 plantings of trees/kelp.²

Saving the environment yields big savings for hospitals²

Purchasing reprocessed devices can help hospitals achieve their sustainability goals while driving down purchasing costs. At SSS, that’s by design. SSS invests in reprocessing medical devices that have savings potential for our customers. As a result, last year our partner hospitals reduced their bottom line with $239M in savings, all attributable to reprocessing.² In addition, SSS invests in Life Cycle Assessment tools that quantify the impact of certain products on C02 emissions. These investments continue to expand savings opportunities for our partners and the ways SSS measures and celebrates their environmental gains.

High quality is our highest priority

SSS specializes in the reprocessing of high-impact, high-volume SKUs, leveraging Stryker’s robust quality systems. ��ɫ��Ƶ processes meet FDA requirements, including obtaining 510(k) clearance where applicable, and adhere to the same quality system utilized by all Stryker divisions.
