Infection Prevention Strategies to Prevent CAUTIs

Presented by Jacqueline Steiner RN, MSN, CIC

CAUTIs are common healthcare-associated infections that can increase patient morbidity, length of hospital stays and overall healthcare costs.1 Nurses and infection preventionists play a crucial role in preventing CAUTIs by adhering to evidence-based guidelines, including aseptic techniques, daily assessments of catheter necessity, timely removal and evaluating the use of external urine management devices. Bundled approaches can significantly reduce CAUTI rates, improve patient outcomes and support a culture of safety.2

Objectives:

  • Review the impact and burden of CAUTIs
  • Identify evidence-based guidelines for CAUTI prevention
  • Recognize appropriate indications for the use of indwelling urinary catheters
  • Identify alternatives to indwelling urinary catheters
  • Explore bundled approaches and evidence-based strategies to reduce and prevent CAUTIs
